In 1955 Mike Williams was fascinated with his father ”Hubert Williams” and his chosen career as a garage door installer at Crawford Garage Door Sales in Knoxville, TN. Mike worked alongside of his father over the summers unaware of his future career, also within the garage door industry.

In the fall of 1971, Mike and his wife Lois started Williams Remodeling & Door Company with a $100 investment into this venture not knowing what hard work was ahead of their family. Mike stayed very busy with remodeling construction-type work and garage door installs as work arose. As the years passed, the garage door service work and new door installations continued to increase, Mike stopped doing the remodeling work and focus on garage door service work and garage door installations. By 1976 Williams Door Company had picked up several builder accounts, installing garage doors on the new houses being built in Knoxville and surrounding towns. Mike leased his 1st office / warehouse in the spring of 1977 from Dewey Wylie the co-owner of Crawford Garage Door Sales of Knoxville. At this time Mike also had purchased the remaining inventory of Crawford Door parts from Mr. Wylie, Crawford Garage Door Sales of Knoxville had ended all operations in the Knoxville, TN area. At this time Williams Door Company sold and installed Wayne-Dalton garage doors.

Mike and Lois had two sons Scott and Randall who both worked summers in the family business in the late 70s and early 80s. Scott came to work in the business full-time in the fall of 1984. Randall also joined the business in 1986. Both Scott and Randall spent the next several years learning the garage door business and starting their own families. Williams Door Company started selling Clopay Garage Doors in 1982 from the same 5612 Kingston Pike address in Knoxville, TN. With a trusted following on builders, homeowners and commercial business owners WDC began to grow and desperately needed a larger warehouse.

In 1988 Mike made the decision to relocate his garage door business 7 miles west of the 5612 Kingston Pike location to 205 Perimeter Park Drive. He leased a small but larger 1500 sq ft office / warehouse from Schaad Properties. This office and warehouse were over double the space of the Kingston Pike office and warehouse. The Perimeter Park warehouse allowed WDC to gain more builder contracts in both in residential and commercial. WDC continued purchasing sectional garage doors from Clopay Building Products and commercial coiling doors products from Atlas Door and DBCI. Once again with hard work and dedication WDC had quickly outgrown the office / warehouse at Perimeter Park
In the summer of 1992 Scott located a nearby property at 220 Sherway Road, only one block away from Perimeter Park. This 3,500 sq ft office and warehouse with a 1.50-acre lot size would be home to Williams Door Company for years to come. Now WDC had the space to begin purchasing garage doors and related products in larger quantities. WDC continued to grow and had the need for more garage door inventory. The Williams family quickly added another 2,000 sq ft warehouse in the summer of 1994. As the work load increased in the mid-90s so did the need for more inventory. In 1996 the Williams family added an additional two warehouses with 6,000 sq ft.

The last warehouse addition was added in the summer of 1998 bringing the total warehouse space to 20,000 sq ft with an additional 7,000 sq ft of outdoor racking for commercial coiling door inventory. The garage door industry continued to increase in the East Tennessee area. Over the years with key employee’s WDC has added loading dock levelers, dock seal, dock shelters, truck restraints, hollow metal doors, metal door frames and architectural lock hardware to their offering. The success of Williams Door Company has been a mixture of hard work, focus on customer service and selecting the best products with a fair price to the end user.
